While more and more people recycle at home, turn off their lights; fit energy saving lightbulbs; and buy eco-friendly products in an attempt to help the environment; many of these same people do none these things when they get to work. Business is lagging behind society in their care for the environment with far less businesses recycling waste; using energy saving products; or becoming paper-free or energy efficient.

Business is lagging behind society in their care for the environment with far less businesses recycling waste; using energy saving products; or becoming paper-free or energy efficient. And of course the main reason for this is the fear of it impacting in business profits or productivity.

However, being green at work doesn't have to impede the business and by being green you can actually save money too.

Here are some examples of how you can become more eco friendly at work and help reduce costs in the process:

Spindown, shutdown and turn off - in many offices computers are left on all the time, even at night. Often too, when computers are only used infrequently they remain on full power. It doesn't take a second to go into the PC's settings and change the power saving mode. Let the hard drive and monitor power down if you don;t want to turn off; it'll still use power but it will be a lot less, which will also reduce the company's electric bill.

Paper-free or recycle - Paper-free offices are a real reality now. There are many tasks that can be done online without resorting to the printer. However, if you have to get a hard copy try not to waste paper. Many printers can be set to print on both sides; and when printing off the web, look for the printer friendly button on the website - it'll save you printing reams of blank pages. Recycle all paper too and remember to place blank sheets back into the printer.

Car Share - its amazing how many people you work with probably live around the corner. Why not ask around and car share - imagine needing only a fifth or a quarter of your monthly fuel bill?
