You can submit articles to article directories, you can buy links, you can create blog posts that link back to your site. Another way that more and more people are currently doing are reciprocal links.

When the search engines determine what sites to rank for certain keyword searches, there are several factors that are considered. Among them, and one of the most important, is the amount of backlinks that the website or webpage has pointing to it. There are a variety of ways to build backlinks to your website or your blog. You can submit articles to article directories, you can buy links, you can create blog posts that link back to your site. Another way that more and more people are currently doing are reciprocal links.

A reciprocal link is one in which you basically exchange links with another site. The best way to do this is to find other webpages within your niche or sub niche and request to do a link exchange with them. If they agree, you then swap links by putting a link to their website on your site, and vice versa. Of course, the placement of the link should be equivalent to make things fair. In other words, you shouldn't put a link to their site within the content of your home page if they are going to put a link in their footer. (Links in different places are worth more or less than in other places.)

The question then becomes, are trading links good to do? Is it a good practice and will reciprocals help you to move up in the search engines? Most experts believe no. All of the search engine algorithms are becoming more and more sophisticated every day. There is a fair amount of evidence that points to the fact that Google, and the other search engines, can tell the difference between a reciprocal link and a one way back link. There is further evidence that your site will be punished for reciprocal links.
