Much can be done on the site itself by a webmaster in order to get highly ranked. But, the search engines want to see other sites linking in, too. In other words, an obvious vote of confidence. Here are a few ways to help achieve getting some good backlinks.

Much can be done on the site itself by a webmaster in order to get highly ranked. But, the search engines want to see other sites linking in, too. In other words, an obvious vote of confidence. Here are a few ways to help achieve getting some good backlinks.

Commenting on blogs is a tried and trusted method of creating a link to another site. The problem is that it has got to the stage where spammers have almost taken over. A lot of blog owners have made their sites 'Nofollow' so there's no value as far as link juice is concerned. Of course that doesn't stop other readers from clicking the link to visit your site.

The key is to look for blogs which are connected by topic to your own site/blog, and make comments which add value to the discussion. Comments like 'Nice post' or 'I agree' are likely to get your comment removed (along with your link of course).

Writing articles can be one of the very best ways to get you as an author noticed, and any links you have in your author bio, or resource box, will carry some weight with Google - that is unless you are using an article publishing site which makes links 'Nofollow.' Personally I don't see any need to use article sites unless at least some of the links are 'Dofollow.' Once your article gets published you could have a lot of readers who click the link to your site, so it can often be an additional source of quality traffic.

If you've heard of Squidoo, WordPress, Hubpages, to name a few, then you might know the value of writing articles for social media and Web 2.0 pages. Google seems to rate such platforms very highly, so this is a trick not to miss.

It is really easy to set up, say, a Squidoo account, build lenses, and create links to your site(s). The key is to look for something if possible that no one, or few others, have already done. And of course, as always, content is king, so make sure your lenses are of good quality.

Press releases can also work well. If you run a business for example, let the world know via a press release. There are lots of press release services around, though some are of much better quality than others. There are some rules to follow when using a press release company, but once you have mastered it you could find your site gets a lot more positive attention from the search engines, and users.
