Traffic analysis will definitely help web advertisers and owners of search engines to get an idea of the web traffic that is taking place on a particular website. The commercial significance of this would be it would give the advertiser as to whether he is getting his money's worth or whether he needs to shift to another web portal.

This will also assist the owner of the search engine to establish if they have to make suitable changes in their web layout, their pricing strategies etc so as to continue to attract advertising revenue and see that that do not get diverted elsewhere.

What is important is not only the data that is generated but also the ability to sift that, collate it intelligently so that sensible, scientific conclusions can be made. If you are provided with a huge volume of data but are not able to make intelligible use of that, then that will not have much value.

Let us first examine the most elementary data which would be average number of visitors which a particular website gets on a daily, monthly and yearly basis. If you see a lot of visitors on a particular website, it may cause you to believe that that website is doing well but what you need to actually ascertain as to the duration of each visit - since, the longer, the visit, the more fulfilling is it likely to be. If the visits are for a short duration, it is likely that the interest will only be a perfunctory one.

Let us try to understand this little better - if one only concentrates on the number of hits that a particular website gets that could be quite distorted. Say, for example, there are fifteen graphics, on a certain page, if a surfer or a visitor has visited that particular page, it will be recorded as fifteen hits simply because that page happens to have fifteen graphics - will this information not give a distorted idea of that site's popularity to the advertiser.

The more number of visitors who visit your website, the more accurate will be your interpretation of the success of that particular website - it will help in making your web traffic analysis a little more precise - the lesser, the number of visitors, chances are that it will provide you with a lopsided idea of the number of visitors which are visiting that website.

What one actually needs to ascertain is for how long each visit is taking place for - if visitors are exiting rapidly, then it seems that there is a definite problem which needs to be addressed rapidly. It could be that your key words have not been chosen well or that your layout is not very clear and precise or that the graphics which have been used are a little confusing or intimidating which causes your visitor to make a hasty exit.
